HCS 4/2/73, not 72

Interesting choices Cliff... I really enjoy that eyes of the world but it never struck me as being a seminal version. The fact that Garcia breaks a string (or whatever happened) makes for a really interesting outro jam with Bob and Phil playing off each other.

I am digging this smokestack though... it's freakin' raw

Shoddy work on my part this morning!

But 12/18/73 will always be my favorite performance from '73. And the gorgeous Miller/Eaton sound doesnt hurt either...

check out the 7/21 version. Garcia's big solo during China Cat is absolutely transcendent. There's something really unique going on in this version that I've never heard replicated - it might be just me, of course :)

wow this is a great AUD. i really like garcia's guitar here. something seems to sound a little different (i think as you mentioned) and of course the band is in complete cahoots and sounding great. really smoking version.

really glad you liked it jds! there are so many phenomenal renditions of this song, so i think that gems like this frequently fall through the cracks.

Well, I stay away from Bests (so as not to utterly embarass myself in this particular company), but in keeping with the spirit, I'll propose the following:

Best Wang Dang Doodle, 9/2/83
Best Do It On the Road, 7/6/84
Best Werewolves, 7/8/78

The best Tons of Steel would be the last.

This show has easily the best "Attics of My Life" they ever did. I'm not big on pinning down single versions of songs* but I have yet to hear one that touches this and I've heard most of 'em that circulate.

*Other exception to my rule: Morning Dew 5/8/77. Oh yes it is.
